Food in Singapore

Eating good food. The joys of life!
Singapore is a small island city/country. The population in Singapore is a mixture of Chinese, Malaysian and Indian cultures. There is also a strong influence from Europe. This all adds up to a great diversity of food. Eating is also a very important past time in Singapore and there are many local food stalls were a great variety of food can be found. Many of the big shopping malls also have food halls. If you can't find something to eat in Singapore, you will not find food anywhere.

Best food ever at a conference
I recently visited Singapore to attend the International Union of Microbiological Societies which was held in Singapore in 2017. This was the 3rd IUMS congress which I had attended. The one was in Turkey and the other was in Canada. At both of these big international conferences, there was not much in the way of food. Conferences have become big money spinners and cost a lot to attend. Some conference organisers focus on giving the delegates a good experience by supplying at least some food during the congress. Others do not want to eat into their profit margin and provide very little in the way of food. At the Singapore conference, the catering was exceptional. Amoung the best I have experienced at any conference. There were about 2000 delegates at this conference and the food just did not run out. Each day at lunch time a different cuisine was highlighted. This was really great. A great diversity of dishes and really delicious.

Wasabi chicken
On the first day of the trip, once the students had arrived, we found a very small restaurant close to our hotel in Killiney Road with Japanese food. This was some of the best food I have eaten. We orders a variant of dishes and my favourite was a wasabi chicken dish as well as a thinly sliced braised pork belly.

One of the must do eating experiences in Singapore is a meal at Boat Quay. This is an area of restaurants built along the side of the river. Really great views of the down town area of Singapore and at night, the reflections of the high rise building in the river is spectacular. As with most places in Singapore, you can select from a variety of different cuisines. We selected Chinese and had a wonderful meal.

Singapore has become an expensive destination to visit. The first time Marie and I visited Singapore, it was still quite affordable. Now it has become very expensive. I guess that the ever diminishing value of the Rand could also have something to do with the feeling that Singapore has become expensive.

Prawn noodle dish at Takashimaya
A great place to eat is the food court at the Takashimaya food village in the Takashimaya store on Orchid road. There is a great variety of different small stalls and the food is probably the most affordable in Singapore. I had a really nice prawn noodle dish for 5 Singapore dollars . A good plate of excellent food and not too expensive.

There are some really world class restaurants in Singapore and it is renowned not only for the quality of their street food and hawker stands but also their high end restaurants. One day when I am big I will go to some of the high end Singapore restaurants. Now, I will just have to make use of the wonderful hawker food stalls.
