Food in Scotland.

Haggis with mash and whiskey source
I had some really good food in Scotland. The traditional dish is haggis, which is basically various organs (heart, lung and liver of a sheep, mixed with oatmeal and suet and stuffed into a stomach of the sheep. Yes I know, it does not sound so good and it took quite a bit of courage to take my first bite! I arrived in Scotland a day before the rest of the group. I was walking around in Edinburgh and started to get a bit hungry. Walked passed a pub where people were eating what looked like really good muscles. There was a special on where I get a starter (mussels) and a main. After much humming and haring, I decided that as I am in Scotland, I need to try the haggis. I pride myself on always trying the local food and haggis is certainly local! It arrived! A little ball of something on a bed of mash with a whiskey sauce. I prepared myself for the first mouthful! Much to my surprise, it was really very tasty. Tasted a bit like cooked liver and had a very pleasant texture. I ended up eating haggis a few more times on the trip! The mussels were also very nice is a curry source. We (once the group arrived) found a pub which served a very nice plate of Nachos with plenty of toppings (in fact more toppings than nachos!). Haggis was one of the toppings. Another pub, just below the castle served a bowl of soup with a toasted sandwich. For the cost, a very good meal. Washed down with half a pint of beer, pretty good!

Deconstructed Scotch eggs
A deconstructed Scotch egg also a very nice dish I had in the Mercure Edinburgh City Hotel (very nice food, but the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in). This was a poached egg and two little balls of crumbed black pudding (blood sausage for those of you who do not know what black pudding is).
Along with Charlotte and people from Biocheck, I had a  really fantastic meal in one of the top end resturants in Edinburgh. The food was really great. A most enjoyable evening. Of course Fish and chips is a very popular dish in the UK and Scotland was no exception. There was a great place to eat quite close to the hotel that we were all staying in called Platform 5. They had some really good specials on with food and beer. Really great. We (as a group), eat there a few times. I had my Fish and chips there. A very good thick cruchy batter over some perfectly cooked fish. Most enjoyable. Pretty much everything I ate in Scotland was good. I was not expecting the trip to Scotland to turn out to be a culinary journey, but I was most pleastently surprised!
